A Cardiff chip shop will be opening its doors to the homeless, vulnerable, and elderly free of charge for the sixth year running. Victoria Fish Bar in Whitchurch has given free food, clothes and toiletries to people in need for the last five years.
In 2019, when owner Muhammad Nazakat began the scheme, the restaurant fed around 400 people for free. It has grown each year since and last year, around 800 people received free meals from the chippy.
As the number of places opening on Christmas Day has grown, the chip shop’s owner will now open instead on Boxing Day for the second year. They will be providing free meals from noon to 3pm on the day. They will also be handing out gifts that have been donated, but after being inundated with calls from people offering to help, they want to say that they cannot accept cash donations. Announcing their plans for 2024, the team said: “So this is the post you guys are waiting for. For the Sixth year running we have decided to stay open for the homeless and the wider community. However this year we will be opening on Boxing Day from 12-3pm. As there is already a lot of support on Christmas Day we thought it would be wise to help out on the next day like we did last year.”
They added: “This year has been especially tough with the cost-of-living crisis and with inflation at a very high. So, we think it would be a good idea to spread a more positive message of generosity and kindness to help overcome the doom and gloom of this difficult era.
“Also, we would like to pay back to the community who have helped and supported us this year. So, from 12-3pm we shall be open to those less fortunate, providing clothes and donations, as well as free food and drink. As always, we will need your help as we have to deliver all around Cardiff. To those who are working on Boxing day, feel free to pop in for some scrumptious food and drink at no cost. To those who would like to volunteer or donate clothing/essentials, please contact us.”
The restaurant has always seen a positive response from the community in Cardiff, with people showing their appreciation and volunteering to help out on the day.
