A470 to be partly shut for three months

A section of the A470 will be closed for three months from January, the Welsh Government has confirmed. The road will be closed for around a three mile stretch between Talerddig and Dolfach from January 20, 2025 to April 11. The closure comes after the road was closed for two months earlier this year to complete work on retaining a retaining wall which supported the road partially collapsed.

The road underwent an emergency closure in October 2023 in order for a temporarily solution to retain the wall to be erected before the two month closure for the permanent solution in October 2024. That closure comes to an end on December 20, before being re-closed in January.

The government said the work was temporarily paused in October due to the rail collision on the Cambrian railway line in October. The upcoming full closure which will go on until April 11. From this there will then be two-way traffic reinstalled at the site whilst construction is completed.

All traffic management is hoped to be removed from the site by April 30, 2025. The government said the duration of the works has been extended to allow for a water main diversion. Join our WhatsApp news community here for the latest breaking news. You will receive updates from us daily.

A section of the diversion route, the A458 at Nant y Dugoed, has traffic signals in place following a wall collapse, but this is not expected to add significantly to journey times. Work to stabilise the wall will be carried out at the earliest opportunity once the work in Talerddig is complete. It is thought that the works will improve the resilience of the A470.

Repairs to the retaining wall above the adjacent Afon Laen will mean the stretch of road will be closed 24hrs a day throughout this period. The statement about the closures from the Welsh Government adds: “This work is essential in order to ensure the road can remain open in the years to come. We understand this will cause disruption in the short term while the work is under way, and we thank drivers for their patience. It is vital this work is carried out at this time for the future resilience of the road.”
