Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s sell 15p veg and cut-price turkey

Christmas is a lot about tradition and one of the more recent trends it set to return. Over recent years supermarkets have taken the challenge to win festive shoppers to the vegetable aisles slashing the cost of key lines to just 15p.

Now Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have all announced the deal is coming back for December 2024. And some have also slashed the price of the main event – cutting the cost of the turkey.

It has also been promised that people will be able to get their festive meal for under £2 per person a certain stores using different deals on offer. Here’s what offers are available from five of the biggest supermarkets.

Lidl

Budget chain Lidl is slashing prices on all this season’s Christmas veg must-haves from December 19 to December 24. The 15p a go offers include British Parsnips (500g), British Carrots (1kg) British Brussel Sprouts (500g), Echalion Shallots (300g), British Swede (each) and White Potatoes (2kg).

A store spokesman said: “Lidl prices are always market leading, even when others reduce theirs. But Lidl works on long-term agreements with producers and growers, ensuring that promotional prices do not affect the price paid to the farmer.

Aldi

Aldi is slashing the cost of six of its festive veggies to just 15p each. Starting from December 19 customers can get 2kg of white potatoes, 1kg of carrots, 500g of parsnips, red and white cabbages, broccoli, and 500g of Brussels sprouts all for the bargain offer.

It is also cutting offering affordable prices for its turkeys with prices starting at £2.95. The turkeys come in a variety of sizes and prices to cater to everyone.

Aldi’s Christmas dinner package, providing a turkey dinner with all the trimmings for six people comes in at £11.45, or £1.91 per head. The eight piece offer includes a Small Fresh British Turkey, at £2.95 a kilo plus Nature’s Pick Potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots and Parsnips, all priced at 15p each.

The rest is made up of Quixo Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix at 45p for 170g, Quixo Gravy Granules at £1.09 for 300g and a 15-pack of Everyday Essentials Yorkshire Puddings for 46p The deals will be available in Aldi stores from December 19 to December 24.

Asda

Asda is also reducing the cost price of its key Christmas vegetables to just 15p. With the promotion running from December 19-24 shoppers will be able to buy 1kg carrots (currently 69p), 500g sprouts (currently 85p), 360g broccoli (currently 79p) and 500g parsnips (currently 75p) for 15p each both instore and online.

This is the first year the deal has included 2kg potatoes in the offer (currently £1.35), which means shoppers can buy all the vegetables they need for a traditional Christmas dinner as part of the deal.

Alongside the vegetables, Asda is also running a promotion to reduce the price of its British Whole Fresh Turkey.

Asda chief customer officer David Hills said: “Our mission this Christmas is to provide everything customers need at our famously low Asda prices.”

Tesco

Tesco has said it will be able to feed six people for just £1.84 a person this Christmas using its Cubcard prices. From Friday, December 19, the supermarket is reducing the price of small, fresh turkeys by 40% – to £3 a kilo with a Clubcard.

It will slice the price of carrots, potatoes, Brussels Sprouts and parsnips to just 15p a bag. Sage and onion stuffing will be 40p for Clubcard holders while gravy granules and Yorkshire puddings ar also down in price – meaning a dinner for six costs £11.05.

The reductions mean this year’s Christmas Dinner deal from Tesco works out 25p a person cheaper than it was in 2023, when the equivalent deal came in at £2.09 per person (a reduction of nearly 12%). What’s more – a £1.50 saving is enough to pick up a half-price six pack of Finest mince pies on Clubcard Prices!

Tesco Chief Commercial Officer Ashwin Prasad said: “We know that every little really does help at this time of year, and, with the traditional Christmas Dinner at the heart of celebrations across the country this December, we were determined to deliver our customers truly great value on the turkey and trimmings, even compared with last year. We hope that our fantastic quality and great value food, drink and service with a smile will help to feed the nation’s Christmas spirit, however they choose to spend the holidays.”

The products included in the Christmas Dinner offer are available in the majority of large Tesco stores for customers with a Clubcard from December 19 until Christmas Day. Other Christmas Clubcard Prices in Tesco stores include half-price across a range of Finest mince pies, and better-than-half-price Clubcard Prices on beef, pork and gammon joints and whole salmon sides.

Sainsbury’s

Shoppers with a Nectar Card can get their hands on their Christmas staples from Wednesday December 18 to Tuesday December 24. This includes Sainsbury’s Brussels Sprouts, parsnips, carrots, swede, red cabbage and potatoes.

The store has also cut the cost of the turkey to £3 per kilo from December 19 until December 26. Or if you want something different Sainsbury’s Scottish While Salmon is half price at £7.50 a kilo from December 18 until December 31. Both deals need a Nectar card.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “With the big day just around the corner, Sainsbury’s is helping customers make the most of the hosting season with tree-mendous savings, yule not want to miss across Christmas essentials with Nectar Prices.

“Sainsbury’s customers can impress guests this season and enjoy big savings on delicious meat centrepieces including 25% off by Sainsbury’s Fresh Standard Turkeys, now £3/kg with Nectar, available in Sainsbury’s superstores and online from Thursday 19th December until Thursday 26th December.”

It added: “With Nectar prices. Sainsbury’s shoppers can buy a small turkey and all essential veg for just £9.30, leaving plenty left over for other festive essentials!”
