Alistair Appleton was left stunned during the latest instalment of I Escaped to the Country as a previous guest opened up on his cancer diagnosis saying it “never came back” following his move to Spain.
During Thursday’s (January 16) show, Alistair revisited Ian and Simon, who first appeared on the property show ten years ago.
The couple were keen to uproot from the UK to sunny Spain and after appearing on the show the pair plucked up the courage to make the big move.
After showing viewers snippets of what took place during the couple’s search previously, Alistair was keen to discover how life in Spain is treating them now.

Following a tour of their gorgeous Spanish villa, Alistair wanted to discover more about Simon’s health and whether it had improved following his cancer diagnosis.
Sharing further insight, Simon said: “To be honest with you, this has been the icing on the cake. It’s finished everything off. It’s like I’ve gone through that. I’m now at the top of my peak, and I’m loving every second of it!

Alistair asked: “And the cancer’s never come back?
Simon replied: “No, no, no, no. That’s all good.”
But in addition to the miraculous story, viewers at home who are not accustomed to seeing the programme from outside the UK were left confused.
When viewers compared the BBC programme to the rival Channel 4 show A Place in the Sun, they went to social media site X to share their thoughts.

One fan said: “I Escaped to the Country seems to be treading on the toes of A Place in the Sun today by catching up with a couple who moved to Alicante in Spain ten years ago. But apparently #ETTC used to do overseas escapes too, not just the UK.”
Meanwhile, another shocked spectator wrote: “SPAIN?! #IEscapedToTheCountry #EscapeToTheCountry has morphed into A Place In The Sun.”
A third viewer also shared: “The point of moving abroad would be to get away from Brits and family for me.”
I Escaped to the Country airs weekdays at 3pm on BBC One
