Drivers will soon have to pay up to £4 a day to use the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed.
The new charges will start in spring 2024, following the opening of a new tunnel between Silvertown and Greenwich.
This marks the first time drivers will have to pay to use the existing Blackwall tunnel, which has been free since it first opened over a century ago.
The tolls will be in effect daily from 6am until 10pm.
Reactions from the public have been strong, with many expressing their discontent on social media.
On the News Shopper Facebook page, Mr Graber said: “Politically supported toll fees have been promoted wherever possible!”
Mr Edge added: “You get what you vote for.”
Some residents raised concerns about the potential impact on traffic.
Mr Duhi stated: “Traffic around Rotherhithe tunnel will go crazy, thanks a lot.”
Other comments highlighted feelings of betrayal from local authorities.
Ms Hopgood said: “Absolutely disgusting.
“Blackwall tunnel has always been free,” while Mr Faulkner remarked: “Disgusting!
“Khan out!”
Mr Harrison suggested a more drastic approach, saying: “People who don’t need to drive should take the tube.”
Concerns about future tolls were also voiced.
Mr Whelan warned: “His next project will be a charge to cross bridges—just watch!”
and Mr Oake predicted: “I think they’ll be tolls on the bridges of London in the future too.”
Many see this as a financial burden.
Ms Dunmill questioned: “Why do we need to pay?
“It’s a joke,” while Mr Ginger Constable expressed frustration over the delays: “Charging for a tunnel you queue ages to get through—disgrace!”
As the rollout date approaches, the debate continues over the fairness and implications of these new charges.
