A busy road in Newport is closed after a water main burst and flooded the surrounding area. The A4042 Kingsway is closed in both directions and traffic is queueing in the area as a result of the burst water main.
The road between Harlequin Roundabout to Friars Walk is closed following the incident which happened shortly after 10am this morning. Welsh Water are at the scene.
A statement shared on social media by Gwent Police said: “The A4042 is currently closed between The Harlequin Roundabout and Kingsway Road turning to Friars Walk. Diversions are in place which may cause congestion. Please avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your journey. Thank you.”

Newport Bus is reporting that there will be disruption as a result of the closure. A statement shared to X said: “There will be some disruptions on some services as Kingsway Road *( The Road under the Old Green Roundabout )* is closed in both directions due to a burst water main.”
Google Maps shows that there is severe congestion in the area from the Harlequin roundabout up to Usk Way.
A Welsh Water spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to the people of Newport after police closed the A4042 after flooding caused by a burst main this morning.
“Following a report to us at 9.10am we promptly had staff on site who reduced the volume of water being released at 10am. Any flooding should subside shortly.
“As it stands no homes are without water and we are working to restore supplies to a small number of businesses. A repair team is on site and working hard to fix the damaged main as soon as they are able to.”
