Learners at Caerphilly-based ACT Schools have showcased their creativity and talent.
This followed a 12-week collaboration with Team Collective Cymru, formerly part of National Theatre Wales.
The partnership ended with a special performance and the premiere of a music video.
ACT Schools, which provides alternative education for Key Stage 4 learners across South Wales, partnered with Team Collective Cymru to deliver a creative programme designed to engage and empower young people.
The initiative began with a live performance from National Theatre Wales musicians and artists, focusing on contemporary musical styles including grime and rap.
Weekly workshops enabled learners to collaborate with mentors to develop skills in video production, set design, lyric writing, and music recording.
Learners were initially hesitant but soon flourished.
Guided by mentors, they wrote original songs, recorded in professional studios, and prepared for their final showcase – a moving live performance and premiere of music video, Penny For Your Thoughts.
Cei Edwards, schools tutor, said: “A lot of our learners have had to step into unfamiliar situations and reflect on themselves emotionally.
“Writing and performing can be vulnerable, but they embraced it, and we’ve seen some real talent and growth.”
Harvey Liddicoat, one of the students, described the project as a turning point: “I learnt that I actually do have a bit of talent with a guitar in my hand, and I have some confidence deep down.
“The project has taught me that if I put my mind to something I work quite well.
“Three weeks ago I wouldn’t have stood up and performed in front of everyone – but now I’ve done it.”
Lauren Evans, youth learning mentor at ACT Schools, said: “This project has been an incredible way for our learners to uncover hidden talents, build confidence, and experience new opportunities they may never have had.”
