Caldicot Castle hosts annual Rememberance event for young people and families

Young people and families gathered at Caldicot Castle for an annual Remembering Event.

On Saturday, November 30, the castle was filled with young people and families for the annual Remembering Event, hosted by Monmouthshire County Council.

Since its launch in 2016, the event has provided a safe space for those who have experienced loss to connect with their emotions and share memories during what can be an incredibly challenging time.

The day included a variety of creative activities designed to help families navigate their feelings of grief.

Attendees took part in gingerbread decorating, a quiz, and creating special memory labels for a Christmas tree.

Participants also took part in face painting and a role-playing game inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, designed around Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s five stages of grief.

The game saw players embark on a magical galleon, visiting islands representing the five stages of grief, create table decorations and engaging in dialogue and interactions related to each stage.

Each participant brought their unique ideas to life, choosing from a variety of materials, colours, and themes.

As the event came to an end families gathered outside to blow bubble wands filled with wishes and memories for their loved ones, symbolising hope and connection.

Attendees were encouraged to share their stories and experiences to create meaningful conversations and forge new friendships.

The event was supported by the council’s dedicated Children Services team, which includes trained counsellors and volunteers committed to helping families.

Councillor Ian Chandler, the council’s cabinet member for social care, safeguarding, and accessible health services, said: “It’s vital to assist children and families during these difficult times.

“Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who continue to support young people throughout the year.

“Our dedicated team is here to help anyone who may be feeling vulnerable.”
