Former Premier League defender Richard Shaw has been appointed to Omer Riza’s Cardiff City coaching staff.

Shaw, 56, played for Crystal Palace, Coventry City and Millwall during his playing career, turning out for Palace and the Sky Blues in the Premier League.

One of the most notable things about his playing career came when Eric Cantona was sent off for kicking Shaw during a game while playing for Manchester United, after which he launched into the crowd with a ‘king-fu style kick’ on fan Matthew Simmons.

He finished his career at Millwall, where he was caretaker manager for a period in 2007. He moved to Coventry to take up a coaching role and also held the title of caretaker boss there in 2012.

More recently Shaw has worked in youth football for his old club Palace and Watford. He worked closely with Bluebirds boss Omer Riza during his time with the Hornets between 2001 and 2004.

In the summer of 2023, Shaw, who has started work immediately, had a period with the Canada national team alongside Phil Neville, at the CONCACAF Nations League Finals and Gold Cup.
