A burger restaurant has closed after four years in business – following a successful masquerade party on New Year’s Eve for customers.
Charlie Day opened his burger eatery at what was formerly the Locomotive pub on Lynn Road four years ago and appropriately named it Charlies.
However, on Friday morning a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page announced the closure – taking many by surprise, including those who had booked in to eat there this weekend. It is unclear whether the closure is permanent.
A previous post on Facebook said the restaurant would be closed for January after the festivities of Christmas and New Year.
Friday’s post said: “Charlies will be closed for the foreseeable future. Sorry to let people down, but thank you for everyone’s support over the last four years, I couldn’t have done it without you all.”
The announcement prompted dozens of comments of support praising the food and the staff.
One commenter said: “Really sorry to hear this. If it’s permanent Wisbech has lost a gem. The best burgers for miles around and the staff are outstanding.”
Another said: “A lovely place, lovely food, and always made you feel welcome, friendly always a smile on their faces.”
While another wrote: “Oh no, I hope this isn’t a permanent thing as you guys really do deliver fantastic food and service.”
One person said they were gutted as they had booked to eat there tonight.
She said: “Gutted. Was booked in for Saturday and was looking forward to the delicious cheesecake as well as my favourite brisket burger.”
