Christmas and new year celebrations are just around the corner for people across Wales and everyone is looking forward to having a well-earned rest. And that includes refuse collectors.
Over the festive period rubbish collections days will be changing no matter where you live in Wales. Councils across the country have published notices of the changes people can expect when it comes to weeks around Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Blaenau Gwent
Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council has said that recycling and refuse collections will be two days late during Christmas week and one day late during the New Year period. Collections will resume as normal from Monday, January 6. It adds that nappy and hygiene sacks will be collected from the usual collection point on Sunday, December 29, and Saturday, January 4.

Collections due to take place on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 (New Year’s Day), will be collected one day later than usual until Saturday, January 4.
Residents can also put out one extra waste bag for their first refuse collection after Christmas Day. Recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day but open as normal on all other days. The council also advised that real Christmas trees can be recycled at all community recycling centres and can also be taken to the Waterton Depot from January 2.

For blue bag recycling and food waste collections scheduled for Wednesday, December 25, will take place instead on Friday, December 27. Collections expected on Thursday, December 26, will move back to Monday, December 30, with collections scheduled for Friday, December 27, taking place on Tuesday, December 31. The first three days of the following week will also see alterations. Blue bag recycling and food waste collections due on Monday, December 30, will now be carried out on Thursday, January 2, with collections due on Tuesday, December 31, instead taking place on Friday, January 3. Collections expected on Wednesday, January 1, will take place a week later on January 8.
For black bags and glass collections scheduled for Wednesday, December 25, will take place instead on Friday, December 27. Collections expected on Thursday, December 26, will move back to Saturday, December 28, with collections scheduled for Friday, December 27, taking place on Sunday, December 29. Collections expected on January 1, 2, and 3 will all take place a day later than usual.
For hygiene and nappy waste collections due on Wednesday, December 25, and Thursday, December 26, both will instead be picked up on Friday, December 27. Collections due on Friday, December 27, will instead happen on Monday, December 30, and pick-ups planned for Wednesday, January 1, will take place the following day on Thursday, January 2.
Ceredigion
Waste collections usually scheduled on Wednesdays will be picked up on the preceding Saturdays. This will see Wednesday, December 25, collections being provided on Saturday, December 21, and Wednesday, January 1, collections being provided on Saturday, December 28. Waste will be collected as scheduled on Thursday, December 26 and all other waste collections will go ahead as scheduled. Residual (black), food, and absorbent hygiene waste will be given priority for collection if resources are limited.
Conwy
Conwy County Borough Council has published the following information regarding festive bin collection changes on its website.

If your normal collection day is Monday your Christmas collection day is Saturday, December 21, and there is no change to your New Year collection day.

If your normal collection day is Tuesday your Christmas collection day is Monday, December 23, and there is no change to your New Year collection day.

If your normal collection day is Wednesday your Christmas collection day is Tuesday, December 24, and your New Year collection day is Thursday, January 2.

Denbighshire County Council said over the Christmas and New Year period, the following changes will be made to household waste collections.

Newport
Newport City Council has said waste and recycling services will operate with normal working hours until December 25 where there will be no service. It says collections will resume on Boxing Day but will be collecting one day late so collections will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The service will operate with normal working hours on December 30 and 31. There will be no service on January 1. Collections will resume on January 2 but will be collecting one day late, so will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire County Council says there will be no waste and recycling collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, or New Year’s Day.

Please check your online calendars or sign up to the notification service via My Account to see which items are collected each week. Collections will return to normal from Tuesday, January 2.”

Wrexham
For the week commencing December 23 no households in Wrexham will have a general waste collection (black/blue bin) or garden waste collection (green bin). Wrexham Council will only be collecting recycling and food waste from properties on the Monday and Tuesday (Christmas Eve).
There will be no collections between December 25 and December 27. Affected residents will be able to leave extra recycling out the following week. For the week commencing December 30 every household in Wrexham will have a recycling and food waste collection and general waste (black/blue bin) collection. No collections will take place on Wednesday, January 1, so if your bin day is Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday your collection will be a day later than usual.
