‘Confusing’ behind-the-scenes process that unfolds when The Traitors players are murdered

Fans of BBC’s hit reality contest The Traitors have often pondered how it all works behind-the-scenes, especially with regards to players who are murdered.

In the competition, the game’s Traitors can choose to oust a player by committing murder. Wearing black cloaks, the Traitors meet in a turret and decide who they want to leave the game. Viewers then see the unfortunate victim walking into a room and receiving a letter that informs them of their fate.

Another way to exit the show is via banishment at the Round Table, when players vote for who they think is a Traitor in plain sight of everyone else. The person with the most votes then leaves the game after revealing whether they were a Traitor or a Faithful, prompting cheers, or more often in the latest season, tears.

Given the secrecy that surrounds the murders, viewers have plenty of questions about how the process works. Now a former winner of the show has unveiled the ‘confusing’ process that occurs off-camera.

Meryl Williams won the first UK series as a Faithful alongside Aaron Evans and Hannah Byczkowski. In a dramatic finale, they managed to identify the last Traitor standing, Wilfred Webster, and remove him from the game before he snatched the prize pot. The trio ended the game by splitting their £101,050 evenly.

Speaking with Betway, Meryl explained how the murders unfold, and how it can prove ‘confusing’ for all players in the game.

“When the Traitors decide to kill someone they go to the turret. I never saw it as I was never a traitor but from what Wilfred and Alyssa said to me, once we go home, they stay back,” she explained. “The cars come to pick us all up individually in the evening, just so they can make sure that there are no crossovers.”

Meryl continued: “The Traitors’ cars then go to leave but then do a U-turn back to the castle. They then go to the turret and decide there and then who is getting murdered. Before breakfast everyone has a one to one interview on camera, it’s like the Big Brother diary room. This is where the person who’s been ‘murdered’ receives the letter to tell them. I got pulled into the room a few times before breakfast and just presumed it was me who was being murdered, it can be confusing!”

The Traitors continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer
