Emma Raducanu has revealed she sent a ‘long apology’ to Andy Murray after ending his Wimbledon career by pulling out of their planned mixed doubles match last year.

After crashing out of the men’s doubles event at last year’s tournament alongside brother Jamie, Murray was set to bow out of the competition alongside Raducanu in the mixed doubles. However, the pair never made it on to the court together, as the 2021 US Open champion pulled out of their planned match due to “some stiffness” in her right wrist.

Murray was then not allowed to find a replacement partner as the draw had already been made, with the former world number one said to be “disappointed” to have his time at Wimbledon end in such an abrupt fashion. He retired from tennis later that summer after competing at the Paris Olympics alongside Dan Evans.

Raducanu’s decision to pull out of the match was branded “astonishing” by Murray’s mother Judy, but the then-64 year-old later claimed her reaction was sarcasm.

“Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days,” she wrote. “Pretty sure the scheduling… will have played a major part in any decision-making.”

Nevertheless, Raducanu has revealed she reached out to Murray to apologise as she gave an update on their relationship after beating Amanda Anisimova in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

“Afterwards I sent him a long message basically apologising if I caused any trouble, I guess, at Wimbledon, that’s definitely the last thing I want,” said the 22-year-old.

“He’s someone that I’ve grown up looking up to and I don’t want any bad blood or harsh feelings with him. I sent him a long message and he took it really well and responded saying he was disappointed but he understood.”

With Murray also out in Melbourne as part of Novak Djokovic’s coaching team, Raducanu added: “We’re fine now. We walk past each other and say, ‘hello’, ‘well done’. It’s obviously really cool seeing him with Novak here as well.”
