Evacuated residents receive update on sinkhole that opened on street in South Wales

RESIDENTS who live on a street where a large sinkhole opened up are being told they will likely be able to return to their homes next week.

It has been almost two weeks since the large sinkhole opened up on a street in Nant Morlais, Merthyr Tydfil.

Residents had to be evacuated and are now being told they will be able to return to their homes next week by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

Last week, the council issued an update on the situation and explained that the sinkhole was caused by Storm Bert.

Yesterday, the council released the following statement: “Work is ongoing to fill the void at Nant Morlais.

A 6ft steel pipe has been inserted into the existing culvert to support the flow of any overflow water going through it.

Contractors are now onsite carrying out temporary works to fill the hole with stone.

Utilities have been restored to some properties, so those residents have been allowed to move safely back into their homes today.

Merthyr council said: “We are working with utility companies to restore supplies to the remaining properties once the hole is filled, and when this is done the remaining residents will also be able to safely move back home. We anticipate this to be at some point next week.”
