Former Scotland international Ryan Wilson got things a bit wrong in a post-match interview in a moment of pure awkwardness.

Wilson was appearing as part of Premier Sports’ coverage for the game, and was on the field at The Rec after the match to interview players and get their immediate reactions.

It was a penalty from Ihaia West in the 58th minute that secured the win for La Rochelle, with neither side bagging points in the closing 20 minutes. Tensions were obviously running high after the match, and players were still fired up after their contest.

Making his way over to Bath Rugby second row Charlie Ewels, after he had just lost to La Rochelle in the Champions Cup clash, Wilson said: “Congratulations, mate. Great win.”

In a momentary pause between the two as Wilson realised what he had said, Ewels looked at him dumbfounded. Wilson then laughed and placed his arm around the former Scotland back rower.

“Completely got that wrong,” he said hurriedly. “Sorry… a tough loss. I’ve just been talking to the winning team over there!”

The clip has been viewed over 100,000 times on social media.

“Oh that’s a howler,” wrote one.

“Haha, superb blooper,” said another.

The scoreline was tight on Friday night, with Bath losing 24-20 at their home ground.

Tries from Oscar Jegou, Reda Wardi and Tawera Kerr-Barlow helped Ronan O’Gara’s team to victory. It was always going to be a tough test for Bath against the 2022 and 2023 winners.

Bath have an away trip to Italian outfit Benetton in next weekend’s action, while La Rochelle host Bristol Bears in France.
