A prize-winning beef farmer near Ashwater, between Launceston and Holsworthy, is hoping to develop a rural tourist attraction and leisure facility by creating four fishing lakes.
Ian Ellacott, a fifth-generation farmer who raises pedigree Red Ruby Devon cattle, has applied for planning permission to construct the lakes, picnic and angling areas, access track, parking, and landscaping at Lower Larkworthy Farm.
In documents to Torridge District Council on his behalf, planning agent Acorus said Mr. Ellacott has recently diversified by converting agricultural buildings into luxury tourist accommodation.
“It is the applicant’s intention to make best use of his land, striking a balance between food production, profitability, and biodiversity enhancement, in addition to providing opportunities for visitors to North Devon,” it said.
The proposed fishing lakes would be open to the public as well as to people booking holiday accommodation and would “increase awareness and accessibility of the rural sport.”
The land is said to be very wet and cannot be used to grow crops.
The agent says it is most suitable as pastureland and grazing, but this has led to cattle “causing compaction” and has not been used for some time.
Mr. Ellacott plans to hold fishing lessons at the lakes, and the enterprise is expected to offer part-time employment and work experience to local people.
He also plans to encourage wildlife to the land and allow people to reconnect with nature.
Mr. Ellacott has won prizes for his Larkworthy Herd cattle at agricultural shows in Devon and Cornwall.
