Flood alerts in place across Wales as heavy rain batters country again

A number of flood alerts are in force across Wales as the country faces another spell of wet weather. The alerts have been issued by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) throughout Wednesday and affect different parts of the country.

Wales has recently been battered by inclement weather brought about by Storm Bert and Storm Darragh. While the weather has been drier in recent days, heavy rain has fallen in several areas on Tuesday and Wednesday. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter.

No weather warnings from the Met Office are currently in force, but NRW has issued several alerts in the past 24 hours. It has three levels of alerts – a severe flood warning, a flood warning, or just a flood alert. 12 of the latter are currently in force at the following locations:

  • River Ewenny and Vale of Glamorgan west

  • Rivers Llynfi and Ogmore

  • Upper Tawe

  • River Neath

  • Rivers Gwendraeths

  • Rivers in Llanelli

  • Rivers Nant-Y-Fendrod and Nant Bran

  • Rivers Loughor and Amman

  • Vyrnwy catchment

  • Lower Severn catchment in Powys

  • Conwy Catchment

  • Glaslyn and Dwyryd Catchment

According to NRW, the alerts say: “Flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected. Rainfall is currently affecting this area. River Levels are above normal levels.”

All of the alerts were issued in Wednesday, while others affecting the coasts in Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire were lifted earlier in the day. According to the Met Office, heavy rain could continue throughout Wednesday evening but things should look brighter from Thursday onwards.

For Wednesday evening, the Met Office said: “Cloudy and wet evening as heavy rain gradually clears eastwards into the early hours. Coastal gales in the south for a time. Clearer spells developing behind, although accompanied by blustery showers. Mild evening but chillier by dawn. Minimum temperature 2 °C.” For Thursday, the Met Office said: “Bright start with sunny spells during the day, although blustery showers continuing, turning to sleet and snow over the mountains. Feeling much colder than Wednesday with brisk northwesterly winds. Maximum temperature 8 °C.”
