Flood alerts issues across Wales as Storm Herminia hits – full list of ‘be prepared’ warnings

Stormy weather is bringing the threat of flooding and more disruption to transport across large parts of Wales on Monday. A yellow warning for rain is in place with 10 flood alerts in place.

A warning for periods of heavy rain that could cause some flooding of roads and properties is in place most of Wales until 11.59pm on Monday with the Met Office predicting 20mm to 40mm to fall quite widely and 50mm to 70mm on higher ground.

Okehampton in Devon had 35.8mm of rain on Sunday, while an 83mph gust was recorded in Berry Head, south Devon, and 81mph in Capelcurig, north Wales.

Most of the 10 flood warnings, where flooding is expected, issued by the Natural Resources Wales cover the south west and coastal areas.

The alerts are here:

  • Lower Severn catchment in Powys

  • North Wales coast

  • River Wye in Powys

  • Upper Towy

  • Pembrokeshire coast

  • West Anglesey coastline

  • Lleyn Peninsula and Cardigan Bay coastline

  • River Ewenny and Vale of Glamorgan West

  • River Neath

  • Rivers Loughor and Amman

  • River Cothi

The agency is warning that in many of the coastal areas there is a combination of the high tides and weather conditions that could cause flooding between 7.30am and 10.30am on Monday morning.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: “Things are going to stay unsettled in the next few days. We’re getting successive spells of wet and windy weather, which is obviously adding to impacts.”

While not as powerful as Storm Eowyn, a low-pressure system was named Storm Herminia by meteorologists in Spain which was expected to feel the strongest winds.

More bad weather is on the way on Monday with the Met Office forecast for Wales warming it will be windy with showers or longer periods of rain and coastal gales.

The full forecast says: “Frequent showers or longer periods of rain with heavy and thundery downpours possible, and a risk of localised flooding in places. Windy for all and very windy in coastal areas with severe gales possible. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

“Further rain at times this evening and overnight. Staying windy in southern coastal regions with gales on exposed coasts but winds easing elsewhere. A relatively mild and frost free night. Minimum temperature 4 °C.”

The Met Office yellow warning for rain says that there could be “showers or longer spells of rain during Monday” with the warning in place for Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Wrexham.
