Gavin & Stacey stars announce Christmas takeover as Ruth Jones drops bombshell

Gavin & Stacey fans only have a few more weeks to wait before they finally find out what will happen in the last ever episode of the BBC sitcom. As excitement is ramping up, James Corden and Ruth Jones revealed on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show that their last day working on Gavin & Stacey is nearly over and Ruth dropped a bombshell about what fans should expect in the finale.

James confirmed that editing of the Christmas special is set to finish on December 10. He said, “Today is the last day on the finale”. “We’ve done the edit and now we’re doing the dub part, where all the sound effects go on. It will be the last day where we’ll in the studio together,” explained Ruth.

Zoe said that it must be emotional for the pair to say goodbye to the characters after 17 years and Ruth replied. “It’s strange. James and I have always felt, they really do exist. It’s not like they’re dying. Well… Watch the finale,” she joked.

“We feel like they still exist, for us, they’re carrying on living their lives in Barry, or in Billericay it’s just that we are not party to what goes on in their life anymore.” For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter

The pair also shared some behind-the-scenes about filming one of the episodes in the second series. When Gavin and Stacey are coming back from their honeymoon in the first episode, they are greeted by Pam and Mick with their “beautiful carpark” in what looks like an airport.

However, James revealed that the crew had to transform the Millennium Centre in Cardiff into an airport as they had spent their budget elsewhere. He said: “The reason we had to do that in the Millennium Centre and not go to an actual airport is because we spent all of the budget rebuilding the toll booths of the Severn Bridge in a car park.”

James and Ruth, who are the co-creators of Gavin & Stacey, also announced that they will be presenting BBC Radio 2 Breakfast: A Gavin and Stacey Takeover live on Monday, December 23. They will be joined by their fellow cast members, including Joanna Page, Mat Horne, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Rob Wilfort – ahead of the much-anticipated final ever episode which will air on BBC One and iPlayer on Christmas Day (9pm).

During the special three-hour show, the cast will open up about the making of the finale, look back over fond memories since the show began and play some festive favourites. Unveiling their plans on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 Breakfast Show last Tuesday, James revealed: “The entire cast will be here in the studio just two days before the last ever episode”, adding “We’re going to play Christmas songs, we’re going to try and have fun, we’re going to try and engage with everybody who’s listening, and we’re equally as excited as we are scared.”

Ruth added: “What will be lovely about it as well, is it will be the last time that all of us will be in the same room together.”
