Double Grand National winner Leighton Aspell had a lucky escape after a falling tree smashed into his car during Storm Darragh.

The Irishman suffered a broken arm and internal bleeding following the incident last Saturday.

The 48-year-old was discharged from hospital last week and is now believed to be recovering at home in Ireland with his family.

Giving an update on Aspell’s condition, his former boss Oliver Sherwood, told The Sun: “Thankfully he is back home now and doing fine.

“He has a broken arm and some internal bleeding but it could have been much worse.”

Aspell won back-to-back Grand Nationals, first winning with on Pineau De Re 2014, before claiming the title again with Sherwood’s hugely popular horse Many Clouds.

Following a long and successful career, Aspell called time on his riding career in February 2020, having initially retired in 2007 before making a return.

This was just one of several high-profile incidents during Storm Darragh, which wreaked havoc over much of Britain and Ireland last weekend. Two people were killed by falling trees while thousands across Wales were left without power.

A number of sporting fixtures were also called off, including the Becher Chase meeting Aintree, which was battered by high winds and torrential rain.
