A popular Haverfordwest hotel that belonged to the same family for over 40 years is under new ownership.
The Cromwell family have passed Hotel Mariners to Mr Tony Coughlan who took over the business on Friday, December 13, 2024.
Hotel Mariners has existed since 1625, boasting a 90 per cent ratio of recommendation on Facebook and over 300 reviews on Tripadvisor with an average rating of four stars out of five.

Mr Tony Coughlan said: “It’s been a baptism of fire as I took over during the festive period with all the Christmas parties. It’s much easier now and have been made to feel very welcome.
“In my early 20s I worked in hotels before going into buildings and then having my own aerial satellite business. In the last year I was looking for something different, but I wasn’t sure what to get into.
“This hotel caught my eye and it’s a lovely part of the world. I’ve lived in London for most of my life although I visited the area when my kids were young.”

Despite becoming the new owner, Mr Coughlan doesn’t plan to change too much due to the hotel’s long-term success.
He continued: “The hotel has a great reputation, great chef and great staff. I did have plans to make changes, but when speaking to the locals, they expressed how they liked the hotel the way it was. So, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
“I’ve told locals that I would be making some refurbishments while keeping the essence of the hotel the same lovely building that everyone loves.”

On Tuesday (January 7), the previous owners posted on Facebook, confirming they would no longer be running the hotel, while thanking locals for their support.
They wrote: “We would like to thank all of our amazing and loyal staff, past and present – the Mariners would not have been the same without you.
“We would also like to thank all our lovely customers who have supported us. We know the Mariners have held lots of special memories for you as much as it did for us.
“Thank you again for all your kind and supportive messages and cards that we have received. We wish Mr Tony Coughlan continued success in the years to come. Wishing everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous 2025.
“Andrew, Sandra, James, Benjamin and David Cromwell.”
Meanwhile, Pembrokeshire County Councillor for the Castle Ward, Mr Thomas Baden Tudor has wished the Cromwell family a ‘happy retirement’ while thanking them for all the celebrations they hosted.
