Homes evacuated after ‘WWII bombs found’ at construction site in Sydenham

Homes in Sydenham has been evacuated after what was thought to be a WW2 bombs were found.

The discovery was made in Perry Hill near Bell Green Shopping Centre just before 1.50pm today (January 17).

Officers attended the scene and evacuated the surrounding area as they inspected the items.

Following the removal of the items, the cordons were lifted shortly after.

One person, who wishes to be kept anonymous, told the News Shopper: “We were evacuated from our flat.

“It was a scary experience but we’ve been let back in now.”

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “Officers were called to a construction site on Perry Hill, SE26 following the discovery of what was believed to be WWII bombs at 13:52hrs on Friday, 17 January.

“A cordon was put in place and those within that area were evacuated.

“Following the removal of the items, the cordon was lifted.”
