Iconic London café from Layer Cake and Rocketman films on sale for £170k

An iconic café featured in countless films and TV shows and reckoned to do one of the best fry-ups in the country is on sale – for just £170k.

The Regency Café in Pimlico, central London has been feeding people for nearly 80 years – and often sees queues of tourists mixing with locals and celebs in line outside.

But the current owners of the iconic art deco café – which has featured in films Layer Cake, Pride, Brighton Rock and Elton John biopic Rocketman – are now selling up.

The greasy spoon-style diner first opened on Regency Street not long after the end of the Second World War in 1946 and is up for just £170,000.

A listing on property portal Rightmove said a mix of ‘local workers, politicians, and celebrities’ made up the café’s loyal customer base, who tuck into ‘generous portions for reasonable prices’.

A classic Full English fry-up comprised of two rashers of bacon, one sausage, one fried egg, beans, toast and a cup of tea remains under £10, as do traditional lunch dishes including fish and chips, spaghetti bolognese and curry.

The Rightmove listing states: “Renowned for its hearty and authentic English breakfasts, the cafe serves generous portions at reasonable prices.

“Due to a popular social media following, the cafe also attracts tourists looking for a traditional cafe experience.

“The cafe has been featured in various television and film productions, adding to its iconic status.”

Antonio Perotti and Gino Schiavetta have owned the Regency Café site since 1986, though their children have taken over the running of the restaurant in recent years.

The establishment has consistently been named amongst the best fry-ups in the capital, and in 2013 was voted the fifth-best eating spot in London on Yelp.

Interior decorations include photographs of Tottenham Hotspur football players sitting above the original tiled walls from 1946 and Formica-topped tables.

The café has also been featured in several BBC series including Judge John Deed, Rescue Me and London Spy.

It is understood Westminster Councillors want to preserve the site in its current capacity and will not allow any buyers to develop the site for another purpose.
