Major brand name to close down after decades of trading in the city centre

THE WHSmith store in Newport city centre, which has been open for decades, will be closing down this year.

If you’ve walked past you may have noticed the big yellow clearance sale signs for 30 per cent off books and stationary in the shop windows.

It has now officially been confirmed the store on Commercial Street will close its doors in April this year.

The company has said the decision has been made as it is ‘no longer sustainable’ to continue trade.

A WHSmith spokesperson said the company is ‘disappointed’ to be losing their presence in the city.

A WHSmith spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the WHSmith store in Newport will be closing in April.

“It is no longer sustainable to continue to trade from this location and the decision has been taken to close the store as a result of the forthcoming lease expiry.

“We are disappointed to be losing our presence in Newport and we would like to thank all our customers for their support and for shopping with us.

“We are also extremely grateful for the commitment of our in store colleagues who we will support with this transition and redeploy to nearby stores, where possible.”
