Man pretending to hand out leaflets attempts to steal from garden

A MAN has been posing as someone posting leaflets while snooping around residents’ gardens attempt to steal things in New Inn.

Philip Diggins, a New Inn resident, said: “A man who was posting leaflets in homes in Princes Walk/Golf Road area. The man went into the garden of one home and picked up some taps and was about to steal them when the owners saw him.

“The man saw that he was being watched, dropped the items, left and went on his way delivering leaflets.”

Gwent Police are aware of the attempt theft and they came to the property on Sunday afternoon.

Not long after and less than a mile away from Golf Road, another New Inn resident said someone was snooping around her home in Jerusalem Close.

Hannah Adams said: “I’ve just had someone in my garden.”

Mr Diggins said: “There is photographic evidence of the thief and of the leaflet being posted through letterboxes.

“The man with dark short/medium length hair and a dark beard has a white van with part index BJ60 and a ladder on the roof.

“Please share this information with friends, relatives and neighbours.”

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report of attempted theft from a garden of an address in Princes Walk, New Inn at around 12.55pm on Sunday 15 December.

“Officers attended and conducted a search of the area but not individuals were found.

“Anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam, can contact us online, through social media or calling 101 quoting log reference 2400413904.”

Both incidents come after five garages were recently broken into by Ruth Road, which is not far away.

There is no evidence of connection to the garages and the latest attempted theft.

On the crim on Ruth Road, a spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report that five garages had been broken into in Caroline Road, New Inn between Sunday 1 December and Monday 2 December.

“No items were reportedly taken but damage was caused to the locks.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact us quoting log reference 2400399587.
