Two yellow weather warnings have been issued for south Wales as “scattered wintery showers” and snow could lead to ice, causing further disruptions across the county.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning which will be in place from 4pm on Thursday (January 9) until 10am on Friday (January 10) in parts of South Wales – including Newport, Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent.
While a second yellow weather warning, which will also affect South Wales, will then come into force at 3am on Friday, lasting until 11am.
This latest Met Office alert continues several days of yellow and amber weather warnings across Wales which have been in place due to snow, ice and freezing rain.
What to expect from the yellow weather warning in South Wales
The Met Office said the new yellow weather warnings were issued for south Wales due to “scattered wintery showers” and snow which could lead to ice.
The ice associated with the yellow weather warnings is also set to cause:
-
Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
-
Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
A Met Office spokesperson added: “Scattered wintry showers on Thursday evening will slowly fade overnight, leading to the risk of icy patches on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing.
“Isolated snow accumulations of 2-4 cm will be possible, more especially in Wales on hills above 150m elevation.”
The spokesperson continued: “Outbreaks of rain, sleet and patchy snow spreading northeastwards on Friday morning, falling onto frozen ground, may lead to some icy patches on untreated surfaces for a time.
“The extent of any precipitation across the north and east of the warning area, for example across Wales, is more uncertain, and it may remain largely dry here.”

How to prepare for the yellow weather warning in South Wales
The Met Office has issued advice on how to prepare for the yellow weather warning and the risks it poses.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.
“If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
