New singing group in Newport for people with Parkinson’s

A new group singing project is starting in Newport for people with Parkinson’s and their carers.

The pilot project, named ParkinSings, is a collaboration between Parkinson’s UK Cymru and social enterprise Choirs For Good.

It aims to provide an opportunity for those with Parkinson’s and their carers to enjoy the benefits of community singing.

The project will also explore whether singing can help improve control of the voice and breathing, as well as benefit mental and emotional wellbeing.

Fortnightly group singing sessions are set to take place over three months at Stow Park Community Centre, Brynhyfryd Road, Newport.

The sessions will be held on Wednesdays between 2pm and 4pm.

The project is funded by the Arts Council of Wales’ Health and Wellbeing Lottery Fund.

Rebecca Lydon, community development coordinator for South Wales at Parkinson’s UK Cymru, said: “People with Parkinson’s tell us that getting involved with activities in the local community can make a real difference – so why not join the group singing sessions in Newport?

“We hope that these new sessions will encourage people to try singing and help manage the impact of Parkinson’s on their health and wellbeing, meet new people and have fun at the same time.”

Ruth Haugen, impact manager at Choirs For Good, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Parkinson’s UK Cymru on this innovative pilot project.

“There is a growing evidence base that strongly suggests that singing in a choir has the potential to have a meaningful positive impact on someone’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and in our experience, that’s true.”

The schedule for the ParkinSings sessions in Newport is as follows: January 22, February 5, February 19, March 5, and March 19.
