Newport teacher’s releases inspiring debut novel

A CITY school has published a tale of mystery and magic for young readers by one of its teachers.

Ships and Gravy, by Louise Keyes, is set in Newport and its 11-year-old protagonist Dylan is in his final year at “Glanafon Primary”.

His new role as rubbish sorting monitor leads him on an adventure as he discovers more about the mysterious past of his school and his city.

Louise has been a teacher at Malpas Church in Wales Primary School, and member of the leadership team, since 1996.

She lives in Newport with her family and Ships and Gravy was inspired by the discovery of the Newport Ship in 2002.

Head teacher Tom Hills said: “We are very proud of Louise’s novel and hope that publishing it will encourage other aspiring young authors.

“It is a great book for young readers who like history, mystery and a touch of magic that will inspire them to explore the world around them. We are also very grateful as Louise wants all proceeds will be used to buy more books for the school.”

Councillor Deb Davies, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for education and young people, said: “Louise is an excellent example of the talented teachers we have working in our school.

“I applaud Malpas Church in Wales Primary School’s initiative it getting the book published so it can be read and enjoyed by a wider audience. And it is fitting that any funds raised will be used to buy more books for the school for the benefit of the children.”
