A nurse is fighting for her life after being stabbed by a “member of the public” in a hospital.
A man is being held on suspicion of attempted murder following the attack at the Royal Oldham Hospital, Greater Manchester, at around 11.30pm on Saturday.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: “It’s believed that a member of the public attacked a member of staff.”
The victim, a woman in her 50s, is being treated for “serious” injuries, which are believed to be life-changing, the force said.
The Manchester Evening News reported that the incident happened in the hospital’s A&E department.
It said the victim was attacked with a “sharp instrument” which was not a knife.
A 37-year-old man was “swiftly arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder,” GMP said. He remains in custody for questioning.
A spokesman added: “Whilst this investigation is in the early stages, we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident, and we do not believe there to be a threat to the wider public.”
