Storm Darragh ripped the roof off a nursery, leaving young children without anywhere to meet or enjoy their planned Christmas activities. The roof of the cylch meithrin Cei Newydd (New Quay) was completely destroyed in the high winds, leaving children, families and staff “heartbroken”.
Cylchs leader Holly Beauchamp said: “Devastated to announce that the roof of our beloved Cylch Meithrin has been taken in this storm.” She asked parents to “bear with us” while the nursery is shut. Parent Brett Stones, whose son Remy, three, attends the meithrin, has set up a fund raiser to repair the roof which has had more than £3,800 donated since launching on Saturday.
Families and staff are worried that the contents will be damaged if there is more rain, and the building is also now littered with storm debris, said Brett, who is also a town councillor. The nursery is based at a building on the New Quay football club site. Follow our live weather updates here.

“Ths storm left our community reeling after the roof of cylch meithrin was completely torn off by the fierce winds of Storm Darragh,” said Brett, “The nursery, which has been a second home to dozens of young children, now stands exposed to the elements.
“While miraculously, no rain is forecasted in the coming days, time is of the essence to protect the building and its contents from further damage. The children and staff are heartbroken.
“This nursery isn’t just a place where children are cared for—it’s where they grow, learn, and thrive. Parents rely on us as a safe and nurturing environment while they go to work, and now they are left scrambling for alternative childcare.
“Next week’s Christmas party, a much-anticipated event for the little ones, now faces cancellation unless a solution is found. Inside the nursery, the children’s beloved spaces—like the cozy quiet corner where they enjoy stories, the stimulus area filled with sensory toys, and the creative zone where they explore arts and crafts—are at risk of being destroyed if further damage occurs.”
