Olympic champion Emma Finucane among west Wales New Years Honours recipients

Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Emma Finucane is among the west Wales recipients in the New Years Honours List.

Carmarthen track cyclist Finucane took gold in the women’s team sprint in Paris 2024 before following up that success with bronze medals in the individual keirin and sprint events.

Her achievements made her the first British woman in 60 years to win three medals at a simple Olympic games and have earned her an MBE for services to cycling.

Elsewhere, Chris Martin, the chairman of the Port of Milford Haven, and who comes from Haverfordwest, has become an OBE for services to the maritime and port sector, while Llanelli’s Debbie Lane, the founder and chief executive of the LGBT+ Cymru Helpline and Progress Cymru Counselling for services to inclusion, employment, the LGBT+ community and to saving young lives.

Llandeilo’s Judith Harvey, the warden manager of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, is awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park.

Recently retired presiding justice Paul Lucas, who comes from Haverfordwest, has also been awarded a BEM for services to education and charity, as has David James, the secretary of the Ceredigion County Bowling Association, for voluntary service.

Nationally, actor Stephen Fry, former England football manager Gareth Southgate and London mayor Sadiq Khan have been knighted in the New Year Honours.

Honours have gone to a host of other Team GB athletes, including runner Keely Hodgkinson, who was named the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and mountain biker Tom Pidcock, after the Paris Olympics.

There are also honours for those who campaigned on behalf of wrongfully convicted subpostmasters, after the Horizon IT scandal.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “Each and every day, ordinary people go out and do extraordinary things for their communities.

“They represent the very best of the UK and that core value of service which I put at the centre of everything this government does.

“The New Year Honours List celebrates more of these unsung heroes, and I thank them for their incredible contribution.”

Creator of The Tracy Beaker series, Jacqueline Wilson, has been made a Dame for services to literature, while actress Carey Mulligan and television presenter Alan Titchmarsh become CBEs.

Actor Eddie Marsan has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Myleene Klass becomes a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
