Omer Riza is yet to learn how much money he will be allowed to spend in what is looking increasingly likely to be one of Cardiff City’s most important transfer windows in recent times.

The January window opens in just over a fortnight’s time and this team, which is currently in the relegation zone and in the midst of a battle against the drop for the third time in four seasons, needs serious bolstering in the new year.

There is an argument to say the club need to make wholesale changes, with seven or eight out and as many in, particularly given the volume of players — 13 — who are out of contract in the summer and available to hold talks with clubs from January 1.

Cardiff should be heading into this window with a cogent strategy and should be prepared to make radical calls to completely reshape this squad which is quickly proving it is not fit for purpose.

But when asked if he knew what sort of money he would have available to him in the new year, Riza said: “No, not yet.” Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

It comes after the club took more than 75 days to appoint the manager on a permanent basis following a mixed spell as interim boss. Insiders have raised concerns over the club’s player recruitment strategy for some time now and it is paramount they do not botch the January window.

They need goals, pace and different options all over the pitch and their scouting department must be bang on, otherwise this side could face a very long second half of the season.

“We are talking all the time regarding transfers and players, potential transfers. Maybe some players will be going out, maybe some coming in,” he added.

“But there is nothing solid as of yet. Obviously the window is not open yet, but the processes have begun in respect of conversations and they will be open until the window closes.”

After a disappointing summer window in which they failed once again to address the lack of pace and lack of goals, Cardiff can ill afford to let another window go by without making serious improvements to their squad.

Granted, it’s more difficult during the winter window, but their strategy of signing cast-offs and free agents for far too long has let them get into this position.

A clear plan and quality signings are what is needed in order to get this shocking, anniversary season on track in the second half of the year and, City fans will hope, beyond that, too.
