A former patient has become an inspirational volunteer at a rehabilitation ward.
David White, from Rogerstone, suffered a significant brain injury in 2020 after a fall.
Following extensive recovery and rehabilitation, he now dedicates his free time to volunteer at University Hospital Llandough, aiding patients who have experienced similar challenges.
Mr White’s ordeal began when he fractured the right side of his skull following a day of paintballing.
He was placed in an induced coma and had multiple surgeries at the University Hospital of Wales.
He was diagnosed with left-sided hemiparesis, and had to re-learn fundamental tasks like walking, sitting, and using his left arm.
Undeterred, Mr White was determined to return to the ward as a volunteer.
He has been a beacon of hope for many, arranging engaging activities and serving as a friendly face for patients to converse with.
Recently, he organised a pizza and movie evening for patients and their families, with Domino’s generously donating the pizzas.
Mr White also delivered Christmas gifts and advent calendars, donated by Tesco and JCP Solicitors respectively, during the festive season.
He has also established an online support group, NeuroBuds, providing assistance to patients living with brain and spinal injuries, as well as their families.
Speaking about his motivation, Mr White said: “As the brain injury has been such a massive life-changing thing that I have experienced, I now want to help those that are going through this immensely difficult time in any way that I can.
“Volunteering has allowed me to help, support and communicate with both patients and their families in a unique way.”
His efforts have not gone unnoticed, with health board colleagues at University Hospital Llandough’s rehabilitation ward praising his dedication.
Jordann Rowley, from voluntary services at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said: “We could never have imagined the amount of effort David puts into his role and into supporting not just our patients but their families.
“He is such an asset to the health board and we are very lucky to have him.”
Mr White is eagerly anticipating continuing his volunteer work on West 10 Ward.
