Photographer captures rare image of comet from the UK

A photographer has captured a rare picture of a once-in-a-160,000-year comet from the UK.

Josh Dury, 27, snapped the cosmic wonder from Severn Beach in Bristol on the evening of Wednesday, January 15.

He said: “Today’s weather made this an immense challenge with The Mendips, Bristol and Wales being clouded out. Only a clearing before the M4 made it possible – making this a once in a lifetime snap.

“Called C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), this is a 160,000 year comet and this is probably one of the first handful of images photographed from the UK.”

Potentially the brightest of 2025, the comet was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey in Chile on April 5, 2024.

At the time it was about 4.38 AU (655 million km) from Earth.
