Police launch crackdown on illegal e-bikes in city centre – two arrested

A crackdown on illegal E-bikes and two arrests were made in connection to an incident in Newport city centre earlier today.

There was large police presence on High Street outside the fast-food takeaway Subway around 2pm (January 16).

A police van and multiple officers were dispatched to attend the scene.

A crackdown on use of illegal E-bikes was carried out today in Newport City centre (Image: NQ) The acting sergeant disclosed that delivery drivers working at the fast-food joint had been using illegal E-bikes on city pavements and roads whilst making deliveries.

Four of these illegal E-bikes were confiscated and two arrests were carried out.

The acting sergeant also said that immigration authorities were also in attendance.

“It looks as though a bike has just been seized under s165 – no insurance.

“It’s a partnership operation with the Home Office.”
