Probe after BBC-promoted rapper unmasked as killer of schoolboy Jimmy Mizen

An investigation is under way after convicted murderer Jake Farhi recorded drill music referencing his 2008 murder of schoolboy Jimmy Mizen.

Fahri, 35, appears as balaclava-clad rapper TEN who boasts about violence in several videos.

The Sun reports Fahri’s tracks have recently been showcased on BBC Radio 1Xtra with DJ Theo Johnson saying the artist “really stands out”.

In one, available on platforms such as Spotify and YouTube, TEN appears to reference Jimmy’s death with the lyrics: “Stuck it on a man and watched him melt like Ben and Jerry’s.

“Sharpen up my blade I’ve got to keep those necessary. Stay alert and kept it ready, any corner could be deadly. Judge took a look at me, before the trial even started he already knows he’s gonna throw the book at me.”

In another, he boasts: “See a man’s soul fly from his eyes and his breath gone… I wanted more, it made it less wrong. Seeing blood spilled same floor he was left on.”

Altar boy Jimmy, 16, bled to death at the Three Cooks Bakery in Lee, south London, after Farhi threw a large glass dish that shattered and severed an artery in his neck.

In 2009, the then-19-year-old Farhi was jailed for life with a minimum term of 14 years at the Old Bailey for the murder. Now 35, he was released on licence in June 2023.

An HM Prison and Probation Service said: “We are aware of this content and are investigating it as a priority.

“We take any material that could glorify violence or distress victims extremely seriously.”

Jimmy’s mother Margaret Mizen, awarded an MBE in 2013 for her work with husband Barry helping young people fleeing violence, said: “It’s very difficult to comment until I have read it but if this is true, I am very saddened as it will be a shock to the rest of my family.

“However Jimmy’s legacy of forgiveness, peace and hope, which we share in schools, will not change.”

Tory justice minister Robert Jenrick demanded the BBC apologise to the Mizen family.

He added: “Licence-fee payers will be horrified the BBC is promoting music from a man who committed a murder which shocked Britain.

“By playing his music the BBC are helping him make money from his crime.

“They must do more to ensure that they know exactly who they are promoting in their shows, because impressionable children will hear this and it might make them think these people are role models, when they are a scourge on society.”

Shadow policing minister Matt Vickers added: “The BBC should be promoting role models, not convicts.

“This is a shameful abuse of taxpayer funding, and the BBC need to drop this promotion and apologise.”

The BBC said nobody at the station knew of TEN’s true identity.

The broadcaster said in a statement: “The song lyrics you have put to us have not been played on the BBC.

“Decisions on music are made on a case-by-case basis and we have strict editorial guidelines in place before any content is broadcast or posted.

“BBC 1Xtra does not glamorise violence and this individual does not feature on any playlists.”

Since his release from HMP Long Lartin, Fahri has moved into a flat in Deptford, where he lives with his dog.

He wears a tag, follows a curfew and is barred from entering Lewisham where the Mizens still live.

On his track Juggy he also apparently admits to lying under oath.

He raps: “I don’t talk ‘cos I’m signed to the streets. Went to court, put my hand on that book, and I lied through my teeth.”

Last week, Kelyan Bokassa, 14, a drill rapper known as Grippa, was stabbed to death on a double-decker bus in Woolwich.

Shadow safeguarding minister Alicia Kearns said it was “extraordinary the BBC doesn’t vet people wearing balaclavas”.

She posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Extraordinary the BBC doesn’t vet people wearing balaclavas.

“It could have been anyone.

“It is a murderer, whose victim’s parents have demonstrated enormous dignity.

“How much has he profited thanks to the BBC promoting his music which glorifies murder?”
