Serious ‘concern for safety’ closed M4 and busy roundabout in the city at rush hour

GWENT POLICE closed the M4 westbound at Junction 28, Tredegar Park, due to a concern for the welfare of a woman on the bridge overlooking the Forge Road Roundabout in Newport.

As a precaution, police closed the M4, as well as the roundabout, while the woman was brought to safety.

Traffic was at a standstill for quite some time, for those driving between Bassaleg and Newport town centre, also for those driving from Newport to Cardiff.

The roads were closed from around 4.45pm and reopened just before 6pm this evening, January 13.

For those already driving in the affected areas, traffic was held for around one hour.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report at around 4.35pm on Monday 13 January concerning the welfare of a woman on a bridge over junction 28 of the M4.

“Officers attended and she was brought to safety.

“M4 westbound, between junction 28 and 29, and Forge Road, between Tredegar House roundabout and Bassaleg, were closed at the time but have since been reopened.”
