People have been injured after a Christmas fairground ride ‘collapsed’ in Birmingham city centre. An area around the Star Flyer ride in Centenary Square has been sealed off by police on Thursday evening.

According to Birmingham Live several police cars, ambulances and fire engines have attended the scene. A police officer at the scene told a reporter at the scene that the ride “collapsed”. A West Midlands Police spokesperson said a number of people have been treated at the scene for injuries. West Midlands Fire Service said the ride “failed and crashed,” adding that it “dropped to ground level whilst in operation.” One person has been taken to hospital.
West Midlands Police said in a statement: “We currently have officers in Centenary Square, Birmingham following reports of an issue with one of the rides. A small number of people are being treated at the scene by paramedics – but no serious injuries have been reported. Centenary Square remains cordoned off this evening while we support our emergency service colleagues. Please avoid the area.” As of 9.30pm on Thursday, the incident is ongoing.
