Shoppers left baffled as M&S Colin the Caterpillar cakes found in Aldi stores

Shoppers have been left baffled this week after spotting M&S Colin the Caterpillar cakes appearing on shelves in Aldi stores.

Several posts have been shared online showing the M&S cake being placed next to Aldi’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar cakes.

Additionally, the cake box has been draped in a cloak, seemingly inspired by the ones worn on BBC’s The Traitors.

The stunt appears to be in reference to the infamous dispute between the supermarkets back in 2021 when M&S sought legal action against Aldi.

They claimed that Aldi’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake infringed upon Colin’s trademark.

Eventually, the matter was settled, with Aldi making a few design changes to Cuthbert which allowed him back on shelves.

Several people tagged the budget supermarket in posts on X (formerly known as Twitter) asking what was going on.

One person wrote: “I’m so confused guys!? No way is that an @marksandspencersuk Colin in a traitors cloak in Swanley @aldiuk ?!”

Another said: “Someone’s put Colin in Auldhouse @aldiuk with a @traitorsuk cloak on @marksandspencer”.

A third simply said: “One of these is not like the others @AldiUK”.

Aldi responds to M&S Colin the Caterpillar cake appearing on its shelves

Aldi’s social media pages are not exactly shy about interaction and didn’t take long to respond to Colin’s sightings in its stores.

Replying to a user on X (formerly known as Twitter) who had shared an image with them, the supermarket said: “He’s trying to blend in with the good guys”.

Meanwhile, in response to someone describing the stunt as “epic” they posted: “As will be the full armed lob into a wall he shall receive when we find him!”

It is unknown if M&S is officially behind the action, but plenty of people have found it quite funny nonetheless.

One person shared on X: “Sometimes I love this country and things like this are why”.

Another simply stated: “This is the funniest thing I’ve seen all week”.

Plenty of people also enjoyed Aldi’s response to the images, as a person replied to the supermarket’s post saying: “Aldi’s got everyone playing detective with this Cuthbert vs. Colin saga”.

Another joked: “Clearly adopted at birth by someone who didn’t know how to take care of the precious little thing”.

Meanwhile, a third expressed their preference for Cuthbert when placed side-by-side next to Colin, writing: “Cuthbert really has the friendlier face doesn’t he? What the hell’s Colin been smoking?”
