‘Smallest Christmas tree festival’ opens in Newport

Newport Cathedral is hosting the ‘smallest Christmas tree festival’ in Wales.

Titled Woolos Winter Wonderland, the festival features a small forest of Christmas trees decorated by local businesses and a representation of Newport’s Transporter Bridge.

The idea, conceived by Wendy Diamond, Bishop Cherry’s partner, aims to create a miniature Christmas tree festival.

Participating businesses include a launderette, art school, nail bar, dress shop, Vittorio’s Italian restaurant, and Tovey Brothers Funeral Directors.

Each tree is decorated in a unique style, reflecting the businesses’ character.

James Tovey, of Tovey Brothers, stated that the festival is a ‘marvellous way of connecting the Cathedral with the wider community’.

Tovey’s tree, described as a ‘family tree’, featured all members of the Tovey family involved in the firm, as well as all their staff.

Vittorio’s head waiter, George, created a tree rooted in a large empty tin of Italian tomatoes, with decorations made of pasta and the restaurant’s colourful menus.

The festival runs until the Feast of the Epiphany and can be viewed daily at the cathedral, where it will be illuminated during all Christmas services.

Newport Cathedral has lined up a series of Christmas services.

On Sunday, December 22, a Christmas jumper carol service will be held at 4pm.

Christmas Eve will feature a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at 4pm and the Midnight Eucharist at 11pm.

Christmas Day will see the Holy Eucharist of Christmas Dawn at 8am and the Cathedral Eucharist of Christmas Morning at 10.30am.
