After a mild and grey Christmas period people in Wales will be hoping for the stable weather to continue into the new year. However forecasters have warned of a named storm brewing with snow likely for some as we enter 2025.
Weatherman Derek Brockway warned on X: “Turning much more unsettled next week. 2025 could start with some disruptive weather with a deep low pressure bringing a spell of heavy rain, strong winds and gales. Snow for some too. This low could be named storm Éowyn.”
The Met Office medium-range forecast for Wales also suggests areas will be affected by snowfall between New Year’s Eve and Thursday, January 2. The website states: “Unsettled and very windy midweek with heavy rain at times and perhaps some snow in places. Brighter by Thursday with scattered wintry showers. Mild at first but turning much colder.”

More snow is also likely to fall in parts of north Wales, according to the HRES model forecast. Maps show that between 1cm and 2cm could fall in these areas on Tuesday, January 7. A similar prediction has been made for January 9 and 10. Heavier snow is also predicted for parts of Scotland and Northumbria. Its long-range UK forecast, covering the period between January 2 and January 11, reads: “As the deep area of low pressure clears east by Thursday, January 2, winds will turn northerly and cold air will be drawn across the UK. Showers of rain and sleet will turn increasingly to snow, especially across the north, and coasts exposed to the onshore wind.
“This cold showery northerly may persist for a few days before high pressure builds from the west bringing a period of more settled weather. There is a chance that rain may move in from the south over the first weekend of January, turning to snow as it runs into colder air. Into the following week a fairly changeable picture is most likely. Wettest and windiest weather in the north and west whilst the south and east will probably remain more settled overall.”
