Storm Darragh left communities with no power, blocked roads and destroyed homes

STORM Darragh arrived in South Wales over the weekend closing main roads, leaving thousands of people without power, and causing wind speeds of almost 90mph.

In Lancashire, a man in his 40s died on Saturday December 7, after a tree fell on top of his van while he was driving on a dual carriageway.

Another man died in the Erdington area of Birmingham after a tree fell and hit his car just after 3pm the same day, West Midlands Police said.

A rare red weather warning was issued by the Met Office for Wales for the first time since Storm Eunice in 2022.

It covered Bridgend, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Anglesey, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Vale of Glamorgan.

At the height of the storm, both Severn Bridges were closed, causing three-hour detours for drivers, and the runway at Cardiff Airport was inoperable, meaning hundreds of flights cancelled.

Over 100 flood alerts and flood warnings were issued by Natural Resources Wales on the Saturday, with river levels continuing to rise due to the heavy rainfall.

Risca, a town in Gwent, flooded for the second time in two weeks, devastating local businesses and homes.

The rain stopped by Sunday morning, though amber and yellow weather warnings remained in place for wind.

The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge reopened on Saturday but the Severn Bridge on the M48 had to remain closed until Sunday evening.

Power cuts affected more than 140,000 people with some residents in Newport being without electricity for almost 24 hours.

Local councils have been working alongside police to clear debris from fallen trees blocking roads in Abersychan, Newport, Blaenavon and Caldicot.

Disruptions to rail were rife with Transport for Wales cancelling every journey from midday onwards on Saturday, and then all journeys except between Cardiff and Bristol and the valleys lines on Sunday.

From Monday, December 9, there are no Met Office weather warnings issued, as Storm Darragh has passed through our region.

Wind speeds are set to settle from Wednesday, December 11.
