Teenager attacked ex-partner and threatened to burn down her house

A TEENAGER attacked his older ex-partner and threatened to blow up her car, and left her fearing he would burn down her house.

The victim, a woman in her forties, had been in a short relationship with Carl Thomas from March last year, but broke up with him due to his behaviour.

Prosecutor Brian Simpson said Thomas came to her home on August 4. She refused to let him in, so he hit her in the mouth. She suffered a split lip.

At around 2.40am on August 11, the victim heard a noise and found Thomas holding a set of keys. She went to grab the keys, and Thomas dragged her outside using the keys as her finger was caught in the keyring.

He then sent messages saying he was going to kill himself and was also caught on her Ring doorbell banging on the door with a knife.

He later went to her house to collect some belongings, but the victim refused to let him in after what she’d seen on the doorbell camera.

She reported him to the police, and he was arrested the following day.

Thomas was released on bail under condition of not contacting the victim. However, at the start of September, he was caught on camera letting himself into her garden and walking around about 20 times.

The defendant sent her threatening messages, threatened to “burn [her] car and blow it up”, and messaged ‘I like your shed. What’s in your shed’ – which the victim took as a threat to burn down her shed, where she kept her mother’s belongings.

The defendant was also seen walking towards her home with a bottle of lighter fluid, before fleeing when he saw the victim’s child and her friend coming back, Mr Simpson said.

Thomas was arrested again and appeared in court on September 12.

But six days later, Thomas contacted the victim saying he was going to kill himself. She drove to where he was as she was concerned for his welfare, and then told him to stop contacting her.

However he called her multiple times and contacted her on Facebook over September 21 and 22, causing her to deactivate her Facebook account.

Thomas was arrested again on September 25.

The defendant, of Tenby Court in Monkton, pleaded guilty to two offences of battery, possessing a bladed article, and stalking causing fear of violence.

Stuart John, in mitigation, said: “The fact of the matter is the defendant knows full well that the only sentence your honour can pass is an immediate custodial sentence.

“He was 18. He’s now 19. He’s immature.

“He simply couldn’t deal with that relationship.

“He fully accepts what he did was wrong.”

Judge Paul Thomas KC branded Thomas as “extremely immature” as he sentenced him to 12 months in a Young Offender Institute. He also granted the victim a three-year restraining order.
