The amazing tucked-away Hackbridge Indian restaurant within a retirement home

It’s rare for me to go back to a restaurant once I’ve been — unless it’s Nando’s or something with a predictable menu and comfort appeal.

But Rishi’s in Slate and Grain has completely shattered that pattern.

This place is a unique exception, and I already know I’ll be returning once again soon.

Hidden away inside Button House, a retirement home in Hackbridge, this restaurant isn’t the type you stumble upon easily.

(Image: Ezekiel Bertrand) Its discreet location and lack of traditional advertising mean that many people walk past, completely unaware of the culinary treasure that awaits inside.

And what a shame that is — because they’re truly missing out.

Stepping into Rishi’s, we were warmly welcomed into a dining area that felt like an instant invitation to relax.

The atmosphere had an unmistakable calmness to it — it was the kind of place where your shoulders immediately dropped, and any tension just melted away.

The decor was subtle and serene, offering an ambience that blends warmth and sophistication.

It felt miles away from the bustle of everyday life, despite being right in the middle of Hackbridge.

No meal for me is complete without my go-to pre-starter: poppadoms.

But Rishi’s took this simple staple and elevated it.

These poppadoms weren’t plain — they came with a vibrant mix of finely chopped onions, tomatoes, and coriander, complemented by mint and mango chutney sauces.

Each bite had a burst of fresh, tangy, and sweet flavours, setting the tone for the meal to come.

For starters, I wanted to pace myself strategically.

I ordered the Buffalumi Fries, which consisted of crispy, salted Cyprus halloumi wedges served with sweet chilli sauce.

The texture was perfect — a crunchy exterior giving way to the soft, salty richness of the cheese.

I also couldn’t resist the palak patta chaat.

I’ll admit, I’m not a big fan of spinach, but this dish was a revelation.

The baby spinach was fried to a crisp, and the combination of cooling yoghurt, tangy tamarind, and refreshing mint chutney turned it into something truly special.

The flavours and textures worked in perfect harmony, making it one of the standouts of the night.

For the main course, I chose a classic: butter chicken.

But at Rishi’s, it was anything but; the chicken was tender, and the sauce was a rich, velvety blend of butter, cream, and spices that coated every bite with luxurious flavour.

The portion size was incredibly generous — it could have easily been shared, making the meal feel even more indulgent.

It was hearty, comforting, and beautifully balanced.

Dessert was another delightful experience.

The staff, who were consistently warm, attentive, and friendly, brought me a surprise treat — a small chocolate brownie cake.

It was a thoughtful touch that made the meal feel extra special.

One memorable moment came when my mum told a waitress that she’d have green tea when she got home.

As though she was a genie, the waitress promptly brought a steaming cup of green tea to the table.

The experience at Rishi’s was extraordinary, but it’s bittersweet knowing how easily this gem could be overlooked.

Because it’s nestled within Button House, a retirement home, it doesn’t have the visibility or promotion that most restaurants rely on.

This makes it easy for people to miss out on something truly wonderful.

The reality is, if you don’t know it’s there, you might never think to step inside.

But for those who do, a world of fantastic food, incredible service, and genuine hospitality awaits.

In conclusion, Rishi’s in Slate and Grain is more than just a restaurant — it’s a hidden oasis of culinary delight.

Rare as it is for me to return to a restaurant, I already know I’ll be back.

If you find yourself in Hackbridge, take a moment to discover Rishi’s – You’ll be glad you did.
