The cosy and thriving south east London high street that is beating the odds

I recently spent an afternoon wandering around East Dulwich, and I have to say, the high street is everything you’d hope for in a bustling neighbourhood.

At a time when so many high streets are struggling under the pressures of the cost-of-living crisis, East Dulwich seems to have cracked the formula.

It is easy to see why Muddy Stilettos has named East Dulwich one of the best places to live in the UK for 2024.

Lately we have seen countless shops shutter their doors and communities lose the heart of their neighbourhoods, but East Dulwich feels like a rare success story.

Walking along Lordship Lane, I spotted only three empty shops—an unusual sight compared to other parts of London.

The street is beautifully kept, with tidy pavements and an inviting atmosphere that makes you want to hang around and explore.

It’s the perfect place for a leisurely day out, whether you’re on the hunt for unique Christmas gifts, picking up fresh produce, or treating yourself to a meal with friends or family.

What sets East Dulwich apart is the incredible variety it offers. There’s truly something for everyone. From traditional butchers to trendy cafés, you can pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, browse charming craft shops, or enjoy a coffee and pastry.

Beyond the shops and restaurants, East Dulwich is a hub of culture and creativity. The Dulwich Outdoor Gallery brightens the area with its striking street art, while Goose Green offers a peaceful spot for picnics or a bit of downtime.

The East Dulwich Picturehouse and Café is a cosy cinema showcasing everything from indie films to the latest blockbusters.

Art lovers will also enjoy a trip to the nearby Dulwich Picture Gallery, home to a stunning collection of historic artworks.

Saturdays bring even more charm with the North Cross Road Market which is just off the high street.

It’s a lively spot filled with stalls selling handmade goods, street food, and vintage finds, buzzing with community spirit.

The beauty of East Dulwich goes beyond its high street. The tree-lined roads and colourful doors give the area a village-like feel, and the community is as welcoming as they come.

East Dulwich is not just about the food, shopping, or picturesque homes—though it undeniably has a touch of “bougie” charm.

It’s the balance it strikes between laid-back living and vibrant urban energy that makes it so special.
