The full list of Welsh restaurants in the Michelin Guide

Here in Wales, we have fantastic restaurants and gastropubs, all of which showcase the very best of Welsh produce. But some are on a different level to the rest, and have been recognised by the prestigious Michelin Guide.

The Michelin series of guides have been published since 1900 and is renowned all over the world. While Michelin stars specifically rate the quality of a restaurant’s food, their guides recommend various restaurants for their excellence. With Christmas just around the corner, perhaps some of us are looking for eateries that are offering vouchers as gifts for a special someone, or alternatively, are looking for places we can visit and dine ourselves in the new year. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of all the Welsh restaurants that are in the Michelin guide, some of which have successfully made it onto the list this year.

Some have been awarded additional accolades, which can all represent different things. They can be:

  • Michelin stars: the most prestigious accolade, where restaurants are awarded for offering exceptional cooking. Eateries can achieve as much as three stars.

  • Michelin green star: this annual award highlights restaurants at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices.

  • Bib Gourmand: this award is handed to restaurants Michelin reviews believe have the best value for money, in other words, they offer a three-course meal at a reasonable price.

Sosban & The Old Butchers

One star: High quality cooking

Unlike any other restaurant in Wales, the Michelin-starred Sosban and the Old Butchers is located in what used to be a butcher’s shop. Its dishes are created using the best of what’s available locally on the day. They serve surprise tasting menus only and you could face a long wait for a table, as they get full up months in advance – which is understandable when you have four AA rosettes and a Michelin star. The Michelin guide praises the restaurant for its “wealth of north Wales ingredients” in its dishes, which provide “bold flavours and original, personal touches”. It recommends diners to try the cod with fermented onion fudge, which it describes as “superb”.

The Gunroom

The Gunroom is located in Plas Dinas Country house, only a few miles away from Caernarfon in Gwynedd. Here’s where Lord Snowdon lived, with his wife Princess Margaret often visiting the country house. The Michelin guide review says: “Come for afternoon tea or for dinner at either 6 or 8pm. Welsh produce takes the lead on the concise, classically based monthly menu.”

Sheeps and Leeks

Sheeps and Leeks is a 20 seat restaurant which specialises in honest cooking and “well-balanced tasting menus served in a relaxed informal atmosphere”. Situated in the royal town of Caernarfon, it prides itself on working with local artisan producers and offer a set tasting menu that use the best of what’s in season. The much-loved restaurant features a ground floor kitchen and boasts a basement restaurant which houses just six tables. The review adds: “Homegrown and local produce form the base of the set menu, where imaginative dishes show classic techniques and subtle global flavours.”

The Jackdaw

Rather interestingly, jackdaw is the name given to a person born with the walls of Conwy. Located in a former cinema on Conwy High Street, The Jackdaw is the first restaurant from chef and owner Nick Rudge, who worked alongside Heston Blumenthal at the three Michelin-starred Fat Duck for seven years. In the guide, the restaurant is praised for its modern tasting menu which offers “distinctly playful edge”, which is “backed up by well-judged flavour combinations”. If you ever visit this restaurant, look out for the wine menu which lists the wine by how far away from Conwy they were produced.

Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias

Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking

Bryn Williams is a regular chef on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and his Colwyn Bay restaurant – Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias, is highly regarded in the area and further afield. Located only a stone’s throw away from a stunning beach, the menu is full of Welsh produce, sourced as locally as possible. In the guide, Michelin reviewer writes: “If you’re after a relaxed, friendly environment, this striking beachside brasserie with faux industrial styling, blue leather banquettes and stunning sea views is the place to come. The owner is proud of his Welsh roots and it shows on the menu. Cooking is pleasingly unfussy and local seafood is to the fore.”

Henry Robertson

MICHELIN Green Star

This restaurant is in Pale Estate, also known as Pale Hall, near Bala, which is an elegant and impressive Victorian hotel. The guide praises the restaurant for its “attractively presented dishes” which reflect the seasons and “keep the local larder to the fore”.

Penmaenuchaf

Set in the beautiful country near Dolgellau, Penmaenuchaf is a gorgeous country house which was built around 1860. The Michelin guide review notes that the “cooking’s strength is drawn from the prime quality produce”, it also recommends that you stay overnight to “make a proper occasion of your visit”.

Tyddyn Llan

The menu at Tyddyn Llan changes with the seasons, but one thing is always present: classic cooking of the very highest class. The guide applauds the restaurant for its dishes that “enjoyably combine classic recipes” with “some global influences”.

Ynyshir

Two Stars: Excellent cooking

This is the only restaurant in Wales to be awarded two Michelin stars. From its peaceful setting on the Dyfi Estuary to its luxurious bedrooms, it’s everything a destination restaurant with rooms should be. The Michelin guide review praises it for its “truly unique experience”. It then adds: “Regional sheepskins and handmade crockery show the team’s pride in their Welsh locale, while you can extend your visit in one of the luxurious bedrooms.”

Gwen

From the people behind Ynyshir restaurant, the Michelin guide calls Gwen “more of a cousin than a little sister”. The review adds: “The surprise tasting menu offers bold flavours, a good dose of creativity and no small amount of skill, exemplified by the eel chawanmushi. The chefs chat away with diners as the thoroughly enjoyable evening just flies by.”

The Checkers

This gastropub is run by a husband-and-wife team, praised for its “unfussy” and “modern style”. There’s also a place to stay at The Checkers, with four cosy bedrooms available. When speaking about the chef’s work, the review says: “His eye-catching dishes often shine brightest at their simplest”.

Y Talbot

Trained by Marco Pierre White, Y Talbot’s head chef Dafydd Watkin has created a menu that focuses on full-flavoured traditional dishes made with Welsh produce. The Michelin guide review remarks that its “seasonal menus offer full-flavoured traditional dishes made with Welsh produce”.

Yr Hen Printworks

Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking

In March 2023, the restaurant which is based in a former printworks became only the third in Wales to be awarded the prestigious Michelin accolade – Bib Gourmand. The Michelin guide describes it as a “real gem of a property”, which is a setting for “seasonally influenced small plates”. It adds: “Their strapline is ‘Drink, Dine, Unwind’ and you can easily do all three without breaking the bank.”

Chapters

Chapters opened in 2019 with the aim of supporting local producers in the book town of Hay-on-Wye and the surrounding area. The Hay-on-Wye restaurant’s team is praised for their “passion for their way of working makes the place even more endearing”.

Felin Fach Griffin

Located between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, the Felin Fach Griffin is a traditional pub with rooms whose pub grub is delicious and cosy atmosphere equally so – one accredited by the Michelin Guide itself. Their review reads: “Warmth and character abound at this traditional pub. Relax on a sofa beside the fire with a pint of local beer, then head for the Library or Snug to dine. The organic kitchen garden provides herbs, veg and fruit for the simple, unfussy dishes. Cosy bedrooms come with good extras and are dog friendly.”

Y Polyn

A small family-owned restaurant tucked in the Towy Valley, it says in its own words, “You won’t find foams, gels and technical wizardry on the plate. What you will find is beautiful produce cooked simply and with respect.” In the Michelin guide, the reviewer wrote: “Sit downstairs and admire the tin tiles on the ceiling while supping a locally brewed ale, before tucking into unpretentious dishes like fish soup and crispy belly pork. Confidently prepared local ingredients feature heavily, and the cooking is both hearty and wholly satisfying.”

ANNWN

MICHELIN Green Star

With sustainability and Welsh culinary traditions at the heart of chef patron, Matt Powell’s, cooking it’s no surprise that the 10-cover Pembrokeshire restaurant has won a Michelin Green Star. “Folklore, foraging and flavour guide your visit to this sustainable, proudly Welsh restaurant,” the Michelin guide says. It then adds: “From the expertly foraged produce to the Preseli Hills lamb, local ingredients bring with them a great burst of flavour. Extend your experience by joining one of their occasional foraging days.”

Fernery

Head chef Douglas Balish, who came to The Grove from the Michelin-starred Tudor Room in Surrey in 2019, has firmly made his mark at this luxury hotel. The Michelin guide review notes that it is a “nature-inspired restaurant that brings the outside in”. It then adds: “Dishes come with incredible levels of detail that belie the understated, somewhat cryptic menu descriptions like ‘The King’s Estate’. Finesse and originality run throughout, while the superb service ensures your experience unfolds flawlessly.”

Blas

Blas was originally built as a working windmill in 1806. By now, it’s a highly commended restaurant named ‘blas’, which means ‘taste’ in Welsh. The Michelin guide says it “offers appealing menus which showcase seasonal Pembrokeshire produce from John Dory to lamb in pared-back, modern dishes”.

This restaurant is new to the Michelin guide from this year. Their review reads: “As the name may have given away, this spacious restaurant lies in the heart of Tenby Golf Club, which also has rooms should you be planning a weekend away on the south Wales coast. An experienced local chef is at the helm, ensuring that the unpretentious and eminently appealing dishes are executed with care and make strong use of the wonderful Welsh larder; the daily made ale bread with whipped marmite butter will get your meal off to a great start. Ensure you go for a walk along the neighbouring beach either before or after you dine.”

Rhosyn

Rhosyn means ‘rose’ in Welsh and you’ll find plenty of those in the garden of the restored country house, Penally Abbey. The Michelin guide review of the restaurant says: “The gorgeous setting provides a calming atmosphere in which to dine, with a tasting menu or an à la carte to choose from. The seasonally guided cooking is modern in execution but rooted in tried-and-tested flavours we all know and love. Pembrokeshire is well-represented on the menu, so look out for delicious local lamb and some superb new potatoes.”

The Shed

Unit 1&2 J-Shed, Kings Road, Swansea, SA1 8PL

The Shed made it onto the Michelin guide in June this year. The review reads: “Experienced Chef-Owner Jonathan Woolway worked in London for many years before returning home to his beloved Wales to open this industrial-style restaurant by the former docks. His patriotic side comes out in the use of terrific local produce, along with a none-more-Welsh lamb, leek and laverbread pie to share. The other dishes too, from Mangatlisa brawn to a Welsh rarebit on the side, are hearty, traditional and decidedly unfussy.”

Beach House

One Star: High quality cooking

Boasting one of the most spectacular locations on this list, Beach House is right on the beach – as its name suggests – looking out over the beautiful Oxwich Bay. Inside, there’s fresh seafood, laverbread loaf and good wine. The Michelin guide review reads: “Sophisticated, classical cooking is the focus and dishes are reassuringly recognisable. Contrasts in flavour are well-judged and the various components work together to put the spotlight on the main ingredient. The bara brith soufflé is a must!”

Slice

This tiny 16-seat restaurant elevates humble ingredients into the stratosphere and there’s a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. Slice is owned by friends Adam Bannister and Chris Harris, who have been cooking together since college and in high end restaurants around the country. The Michelin guide says: “The passion and pride of the team comes across not just in the friendly service, but in the carefully prepared dishes centred around seasonally changing ingredients – whether that be fresh crab with watermelon or pan-fried sea bass with butter-poached lobster.”

Hare & Hounds

Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking

One of only three restaurants in Wales to hold a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which recognises “establishments that serve good food at moderate prices”, the Hare and Hounds is unquestionably one of the best pubs and places to eat in Wales – alongside its sister establishment The Heathcock. The Michelin guide review reads: “The cooking is unfussy yet dishes are absolutely bursting with flavour; if you get a chance, don’t miss the buttermilk pudding.”

Bell at Skenfrith

On the Welsh-English border, this restaurant is located in a 17th century coaching inn. The Michelin guide review reads: “The menu sticks to hearty, accessible and classically based dishes such as Welsh beef with dauphinoise potatoes and brandy peppercorn sauce. Ingredients from the organic kitchen garden are also likely to make an appearance. Warm, unobtrusive service and an impressive choice of vintage Cognacs add to the appeal, while the super-comfortable bedrooms have an understated elegance.”

Walnut Tree

At 77 years of age, Shaun Hill is one of the most experienced and legendary names in British cooking. He’s held a Michelin star at the Walnut Tree since 2010 for his unfussy yet skillful food. The Michelin guide remarks that it is “hard not to love Walnut Tree” and then goes on to say it’s got “a cosy, open-fired bar, a dining room adorned with colourful art, and owners who run it with heart and soul”.

The Gaff

Located in the heart of Abergavenny, The Gaff serves creative small plates with influences drawn from across the globe and uses only the best quality ingredients. The Michelin guide describes it as “a bright, airy restaurant with a high ceiling and contemporary art hung on white walls”. It then adds” Menus list an appealing selection of well-priced small plates, which range from deep-fried mackerel to local game.”

Black Bear Inn

This beautiful Monmouthshire pub, which serves a concise menu of seasonal cooking and natural wines, is run by a couple who have plenty of experience working in some of Bristol’s top restaurants. In the Michelin guide, the review reads: “There’s a charmingly rustic feel to this smartly run rural inn close to the Victorian market town of Usk. A white-washed exterior, log-burning stove and wooden beams all add to the appeal, while the chefs do their part with a concise menu of well-executed, classically based cuisine. The fish cookery is a particular highlight, as evidenced by dishes like hake with a terrific butter sauce and capers. Everything is made in-house, including the ice creams and sorbets for dessert.”

The Whitebrook

MICHELIN Green Star

Customers who trek to this gorgeous wooded Monmouthshire valley will find delightful dishes lovingly put together with locally sourced and foraged ingredients. The Michelin guide says: “The very definition of a destination restaurant, this place’s isolated woodland feel is all part of its inherent charm. A nature-inspired colour theme and rustic wood flooring suit the location down to a tee.”

Parva Farmhouse

The Whitebrook in the middle of the Monmouthshire countryside

Located in a 17th-century stone farmhouse on the bank of the River Wye less than a mile from Tintern Abbey, Parva Farmhouse is run by husband and wife team, Marta and Roger Brook, former head chef and restaurant manager of Shaun Hill’s Michelin-starred The Walnut Tree. The review reads: “The gutsy, modern British cooking has a classic French backbone and the odd Italian or Asian touch. Booking is essential and the menu is sent a day in advance for pre-ordering. Bedrooms are comfortable and some have river views.”

Heathcock

Run by the same team behind the Hare and Hounds in Aberthin, this gastropub has become a favourite for many in the Llandaff area and further afield. The Michelin guide says: “Simple and rustic in décor, the focus is on the eminently satisfying cooking, which has a strong nose-to-tail ethos resulting in dishes like confit pork belly with homemade black pudding and crispy ham hock. The menu of great value small plates changes daily, while pre-ordering the tasting option will ensure you sample the full range of the kitchen’s talents.”

Gorse

This tiny Cardiff restaurant made it onto the Michelin guide only a few months after opening. The review reads: “You get a good feeling about this intimate, personally run restaurant from the moment you arrive and are greeted by the chefs in the open kitchen. Go for the longer of the tasting menus and you won’t regret your decision, as local chef Tom and his team show a great understanding of flavour and balance across dishes founded upon the bountiful Welsh larder – from seaweed and seafood to Gower salt marsh lamb. The service is genial and unobtrusive, perfectly befitting of such an impressive operation.”

Thomas by Tom Simmons

Pembrokeshire-born Tom Simmons serves refined brasserie food with bags of classical technique at his stylish Pontcanna restaurant. Since opening in February 2020, he’s made his mark as one of the best chefs in Cardiff. The Michelin guide review reads: “Hidden away in the leafy suburbs of Cardiff, this is a true neighbourhood restaurant which continues to develop and evolve. Begin with a cocktail in the spacious, formal bar, before taking a seat in the cosy downstairs or moody first-floor dining room. Proud Welshman Tom Simmons is at the helm, bringing his love of local produce to bear in technically impressive, full-flavoured dishes built on the likes of Pembrokeshire oysters and saddle of Welsh lamb. Whatever you order, be sure to start with some superb sourdough from their own bakery, Ground.”

Purple Poppadom

Arguably the best Indian cuisine restaurant in Cardiff and the whole of Wales, this restaurant has been praised for its “extensive” menu, which “showcases classic, recognisable dishes like lamb rogan josh, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for the tiffin sea bass, which is considered the chef’s signature”.

Cora

Cora, which you’ll find in Duke Street Arcade, is a “small and personally run operation”, says the Michelin Guide. It continues: “Chef Lee Skeet is on his own in the kitchen, with his wife Helen delivering charming service out front. Skilful, pared-back dishes showcase quality ingredients and Lee’s eye for detail; he serves many of them himself, turning down the hip-hop soundtrack to explain his cooking with great pride. Their wine and oyster bar, Jackson’s, is situated on the floor below.”

Asador 44

This Spanish restaurant specialises in sharing cuts of meat and whole fish cooked over charcoal. Run by siblings Tom and Owen Morgan, the Spanish grill is a must-visit in the city as, not only is it delicious and transports diners to the southern coast of Spain, but it consistently receives glittering reviews. Another recipient of a Bib Gourmand, Bryn Williams and co’s bar and kitchen in Penarth is perfect for a sumptuous sojourn after a seaside walk if you’re into excellent wine, cocktails and small plates cooked in front of you with epic flavour sensations. It’s inspired by Patagonian bar and hotel, The Touring Club Hotel and you’ll definitely want to stay there for as long as you’re able. The review reads: “The relaxed surroundings offer multiple areas to dine in, including a terrace and a kitchen counter bedecked with beautiful blue tiles. The menu ranges from snacks to the more substantial, with the unfussy approach resulting in simple, fresh-tasting dishes like crab on toast.”

The review adds: “As the name implies, it’s staffed almost exclusively by family members, with James and his daughter Georgia working together in the open kitchen. The surprise menu changes regularly and is full of impeccable dishes that make great use of produce provided by local suppliers. Wales should be as proud of this restaurant as any Josh Adams try.”
