The One Show guests awkwardly laugh as Alex Jones makes ‘throuple’ comment

The One Show studio didn’t quite know how to react when host Alex Jones gave her take when the discussion of “throuples” came up.

Ahead of drama The Split returning at the end of the month for a two-part special, stars Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan appeared on The One Show this evening to discuss the show.

The hit BBC drama isn’t the only project the onscreen lovers have been working on as presenter Roman Kemp brought up their play Unicorn which they’ll be starring in next year.

When asked how to describe the show, Walker said: “They’re a very happily married couple.

“They’ve been together for a long time, they have children, and they get to a point in their marriage where they don’t want to split up, and they think their marriage might be enhanced by bringing someone else in.”

At this point, Alex, 47, commented with a straight face: “Well, you never know…”

The remark clearly caught people behind the cameras off guard, as well as the guests sitting on the sofa, who all cracked up laughing.

For a few moments, everyone awkwardly laughed, and fellow guest Alan Carr’s eyes bulged at Alex, sharing her unexpected point of view.

He then simply stated: “Wow. OK”, as the laughter continued.

Unsure of what to say, Alex continued: “Anyway. But, you know, it’s a different take on things.”

Guest Amanda Holden then joked: “You know Alan’s [Carr] gone up for that role, don’t you?”

Alex then tried to swiftly move on by bringing the conversation back to Nicola and Stephen and their thoughts on the play and their loved ones going to watch it.

Stephen replied: “I mean, it’s about a throuple, and it’s weird enough your kids are coming to see a play where you’re ‘married’ or with somebody else when they’re not their real mum.

“But to have two women in this play, it’s confusing for me, let alone them.”

The One Show is available to watch on weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
