A YouGov poll for CPRE, the countryside charity, found 82 per cent of respondents back rooftop solar on new buildings.
This support rises to 89 per cent among Labour voters.
The poll results come as MPs prepare to discuss the Sunshine Bill on January 17.
This bill, introduced by Max Wilkinson, Liberal Democrat MP for Cheltenham, seeks to make rooftop solar panels standard on new homes.
The bill needs at least 100 MPs present and a majority vote to progress.
More than 5,000 CPRE supporters have already contacted their MPs to back the bill.
Research by UCL in May 2023 stated that unused roof space could support 117GW of solar energy capacity, surpassing the government’s target to generate 70GW by 2030.
CPRE chief executive, Roger Mortlock, said: “Rooftop solar is a common-sense solution to our energy needs that helps make the best use of our finite supply of land.
“The time for change has come.”
