This is why a police helicopter was flying over Newport

GWENT Police were assisted by a National Police Air Service helicopter in chasing down a car suspected of driving with cloned plates.

The helicopter was spotted in flying over the centre of Newport at around 3.10pm this afternoon.

A spokesperson from the National Police Air Service (NPAS) said: “The crew from NPAS St Athan was deployed at 1453hrs to Newport. Total flight time was 48 minutes. The tasking was to assist Gwent Police in a suspect vehicle search.”

Gwent Police confirmed that the vehicle search was for a car which was suspected of having cloned number plates.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “Officers were pursuing a car suspected to be driven on cloned plates.”

Gwent Police confirmed that no arrests were made.
