Three of the best pubs in Newport with disabled access

HERE at the Argus, we love  a good pub, and we thought it was a good time at the start of the new year to take a look at some of the best wheelchair and disability accessible pubs across all of the local authorities in Gwent.

This week, we look at three of the best wheelchair accessible pubs in Newport.

Let us know what you think of these pubs and if there are any more we should feature in later editions of this series.

The Tredegar Arms, Caerphilly Road, Bassaleg, Newport

The Tredegar Arms, Bassaleg right at the top of Forge Lane, at the junction with Caerphilly Road. Locals have previously recalled many good times in there over many years with us.

The pub is probably named after Lord Tredegar whose estate would have covered the pub,  and in fact,  just down from there in St Basil’s churchyard is where the majority of Tredegar’s historical figures are buried.

The Tredegar Arms are proudly accessible with disabled facilities available throughout.

They are usually serving food between 11.30am-9pm every day and are open from 11am-11pm Monday to Thursday and 11am-midnight Friday to Sunday.

The Hanbury Arms, Hanbury Close, Caerleon, Newport

The Hanbury Arms was also once  a townhouse for the Morgan family before becoming a pub in the 1720s, and is now a Grade II-listed as a building and a scheduled Ancient Monument – it is believed to date all the way back to 1565, although parts of the building are said to date even further back to the 1200s.

Currently under the management of landlady Katy Rees-Thomas, who has worked at the pub for the past six years, it is now a thriving seasonal pub, adored by locals and tourists alike.

With great traditional ales and a delicious menu, the Hanbury Arms is the perfect stop off and a great place to enjoy a fantastic evening.

Particularly popular on a summer’s afternoon is the huge beer garden boasting views over the river and Caerleon Bridge.

That beer garden has won numerous awards, and has seen the pub be consistently named in the Good Beer Guide and the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Guide over the years.

It is also proudly wheelchair friendly throughout, with disabled toilets and easily accessible tables to ensure the pub is suitable for all.

The Commercial Inn, Commercial Street, Risca, Newport

As one of the only independent freehold pubs in the UK for 25 years, the Commercial Inn have always taken immense pride in the uniquely original produce available.

The Commercial Inn is also one of the only pubs in Wales to serve ABK beer, direct from its home in Kaufbeuren, Germany, especially for their Oktoberfest celebrations.

There are an unprecedented 17 draught and four cask beers, lagers and ciders available, coming from 15 different countries, and over 60 of the finest gins, spirits and wines.

Proudly disability accessible, the family behind the Commercial Inn look forward to welcoming everyone and doing their best to make your visit the best it can possibly be.
